Click on the pic to return to Amsterdam story The Begijnhof, an enclosed courtyard dating back to the 14th Century originally provided sanctuary to the Begijntjes, a Catholic sisterhood who, although they never took any vows, lived like nuns and had occasional forays into the big wide world outside. Apart from all the other tourists milling around, it has a really peaceful vibe and women still live there. Amsterdam's oldest wooden house is housed in the grounds, the only surviving building from the time. On the day we visited, there was a wedding taking place. I guess it's a much sought after venue and the little chapel in the grounds has beautiful stained glass windows. |
