Wonderful Wanaka via Queenstown, Bob’s Cove Walk and the Crown Range 4

Well needless to say, we didn’t get round to walking that bit of the Kepler Track we promised ourselves a couple of days ago… Simply ran out of time after the amazing Doubtful Sound cruise. Instead went into town for internet, dinner, and more ice cream and promised ourselves faithfully we’d make up for the lack of physical activity the following day. So set off mid morning for the longish […]

Otago Peninsula to Manapouri, and Doubtful Sound 2

All too soon it was time to leave the beautiful Otago Peninsula. Not too upset though as via a long drive we’d be heading to the beautiful Lake Manapouri for a few days and at some point doing a cruise on the awesome Doubtful Sound. En route to Manapouri we stopped off in the town of Gore which itself didn’t seem to have heaps going on but just outside the […]

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas one and all. Another glorious day here perfect for another walk. Back up to Sandymount Reserve, this time to take in Lovers Leap and the Chasm. Piece of piss compared to yesterday’s walk to Sandfly Bay. It was a busy day walking by NZ standards, clearly lots of folk were out doing the traditional walk before Crimbo dinner. A popular walk, and not surprising as it’s bloody beautiful. […]

Sandwiches and seals (and more penguins) at Sandfly Bay 2

A wonderful way to spend Christmas Eve. Late and leisurely start to the day. Had a rare lie in (for this trip anyway) which was lovely, and spent in a real bed as we have a few nights in an appartment – a nice break from the van. Cooked up and ate another lovely breakfast, then headed out to Sandymount Reserve, about 15 mins drive away for a glorious afternoon’s […]

A Rollocking Good Railway Ride 2

Early night last night as we had an early start this morning. Did manage to make time for a “bar snack” in the pub before getting some shut eye for the night though. Ordered what we thought was a bowl of soup – what arrived was more akin to a large bucket of beautifully presented pumpkin and ginger soup. A tad on the sweet side but hit the spot and […]

Magical Moeraki

So woke in Moeraki to another marvellous view. Nice to have a bit of a lie in this morning. Only a short drive to Otago today. But first… breakfast at the fabulous Fleurs Place. Every bit as good as I remembered it. Fleur was in and since my last visit almost 5 years ago to the day had written a couple of books – a memoir and a recipe book. […]

A day of dams 2

Slept like logs after yesterday’s walk and woke just a tad stiff in the body and to seriously stiff winds. After a day of waterfalls on North Island, you could say today was a day of dams. We set of early as we had a longish drive to Moeraki and we were doing a few stops along the way. The area around Lake Tekapo – I believe known as Mackenzie […]

Lake Tekapo

Arrived at Lake Tekapo last night after a long drive. The stretch after Birdlings Flat down to beyond Ashburton was relatively uninteresting landscape wise. Flat farming land for miles and miles. As we turned inland though things got really interesting. Mountains rising in the distance en route through Geraldine and then Fairlie where we stopped for a quick refuel and re stock. The view approaching Tekapo was absolutely stunning. Snow […]

Wellington, Greytown, Goodbye North Island, Hello South Island

Spent last weekend in Wellington and Greytown having a fabulous time with Hazel and extended whanau (family) who were having a Christmas get together which involved a lot of great company, food, drink and fun. Before heading off we had a bit of a mooch round Wellington, taking in the view, having a relaxing coffee, checking out the underground market and admiring the various excellent sculptures dotted around the city. […]

Wairarapa to Wellington 1

Drive from Napier down towards Masterton mostly unremarkable and uneventful. Countryside got much more interesting the closer we got to the Wairarapa (where I’ve wanted to visit ever since watching¬†Outrageous Fortune The Movie – Christmas Special). Long drive so didn’t quite make it to Castlepoint for Wednesday night as per original plan. Mawley campsite in Masterton nice, convenient if not particularly scenic. Nice folk what run it and a pleasant […]
