More culcha then home

Another late start yesterday and a final bit of sightseeing before the flight home. Headed back down town and checked out the Capitol Building. And the excellent Botanic Gardens close by. Then it was back to Adams Morgan and a return visit to the fantastic New Orleans café for a late lunch. Later caught up with colleagues who’d been doing the sightseeing and perused photos of things I hadn’t had […]

Bit of culcha mate

A couple more free days before returning home so packed in a bit of sight seeing after a late start. After a lovely warm start to the week today it has been snowing and very cold but managed to motivate myself to pound the streets mostly on foot. After being cooped up indoors for most of the last few days it was good to get out and about and stretch […]

Food and sport

Last few days was kind of tied up with work but managed to get out for some fantastic food in the Adams Morgan area of town which near where we’re staying. Really cool area and over the course of the week I’ve visited most evenings for dinner, sampling delicious Ethiopian, New Orleans and Ghanaian fayre. Earlier in the week also managed to hook up with a cousin I hadn’t seen […]

Beautiful warm sunny day in DC temp must be in the mid 70’s. My first full free day before work kicks in so decided to hit the shops. The metro was pretty straightforward to navigate and got a great deal of use out of my $6.50 day pass. The Mall at Pentagon City was somewhat overwhelming but managed to find a couple of bargains at Macy’s. At some point found […]

Blood Diamond

Another work trip to the US of A. This time a flying visit to Washington DC. On the flight over watched the movie Blood Diamond which got me interested in finding out more about the war in Sierra Leone, and the whole issue of Blood diamonds generally. The film was had a sorta happy ending but I guess this probably wasn’t the case for a helluva lot of those affected […]

A week of films …

Spring has sprung and it’s that time of the year again when I get to hang out with friends on the South Bank, bunking off work in the afternoon and watching films. The llgff this year had some great films, my favourites being: the Railroad Allstars – female sex workers in Guatemala form a football team to tour the country and bring attention to the discrimination, intimidation and brutality they […]

Spent an ace weekend in Brighton. Apart from the fabulousness of catching up with friends, went on an absolutely beautiful walk on the South Downs around Wolstonbury Hill near Pyecombe. It was a lovely sunny winter’s day and the forest was magical. Loads of really old and humungous trees. The damp weather meant there was some seriously large fungus action going on too (which is guaranteed to impress me). After […]

Epping Forest

After all that indoor film action time for some fresh air. We’ve had a lot of nice weather for ducks recently so a nice afternoon’s stroll around Connaught Water in Epping Forest was a good opportunity to see them at their finest. There was loads of bird life about but I especially liked this pretty pair. Not to be outdone, this big bird decided to show us who the hell […]

Films …

Been to see a few good films recently after a long stretch of not going to the cinema. Judi Dench and Cate Blanchet brilliant in Notes on a Scandal – the scandal being a school teacher having an affair with one of her students. Gripping story of betrayal and blackmail and a twisted concept of friendship. Bill Nighy as the cheated on husband was pretty damn good in it too. […]

Weather forecasting is a lot more reliable these days and sure enough as predicted woke this morning to find enough snow had fallen to create the usual transport chaos and quite a few snow people. Very pretty it was too (the snow not the transport chaos). We don’t often get significant snow in London these days (seem to remember it happened a lot more often when I was a child) […]
