Leave yourself a good chunk of time to explore Wellington's fabulous Te Papa Museum which is packed full of interesting and informative exhibits on New Zealand's history, culture, natural world, geology and more.

I was particularly moved by a film about a peaceful protest by Maori traditional owners at Bastion Point in Auckland in the 1970's. The protest lasted 17 months. Although the protestors occupying the land were eventually moved, the incident helped galvanise the movement for Maori land rights and precipitated changes in Government policy.

Other highlights for me included getting a bit of insight into Maori history and culture, an exhibition of 70's art, the bush walk, earthquake simulation, and listening to Maori songs being sung in the Marae.

There's pretty much something for everyone here and before you know it several hours have passed by...
