Cape Coast castle, Ghana

Click on the pic to return to Ghana 2003 story

Cape Coast Castle is one of the sites of the slave trade and has existed since the late 17th Century with various additions since. Wandering through it's difficult not to feel very emotional about what went on here in the not-so-distant-past - particularly when visiting the dungeons. Elmina castle a little bit further down the coast is even more oppressive.

Cape Coast castle has a really good museum which documents the slave trade. You can get a guided tour of the whole castle if you want or you can also wander around by yourself.

On a lighter note, as well as being able to find out more about both castles' sinister past you get some great views of the towns and beaches and the sea breeze is a welcome escape from the heat.
