Palatino

The Palatino is right next to the Colosseum. Anyone whose into archaeology will be in seventh heaven here. Even I found it all completely fascinating. Some of the stuff is seriously old, dating back to the 9th Century BC. Building continued into the Mid 16th Century when a geezer called Alessandro Farnese had a terraced garden designed for him. It's a whole ancient village within a modern city. New stuff seems to get uncovered all the time as excavations continue.
You could spend ages wandering through the ruins or just pick your spot, chill and take in the view - despite the traffic humming in the background it's kind of peaceful here.
