I didn't get to see that much of Christchurch but the bits I did see were very pretty. There's lots of good eating to be had here too. I couldn't leave Christchurch without a visit to Nga Hau e Wha (The Four Winds), New Zealand's largest urban Marae (Maori tribal home). The Marae is a complex of buildings with a main meeting house (whare whakairo). The main building contains loads of beautiful carvings and paintings each of which tells a story. There was a passing out ceremony for students happening when I visited so I couldn't do the full guided tour but was free to wander about on my own. You can usually book tours with or without a traditional Maori feast (hangi) and / or concert. Unfortunately the next one was the following evening and I was leaving Christchurch in the afternoon.
