The drive out to Akaroa from Lyttleton along the Summit Road was absolutely stunning. Drive carefully -- the roads can be very windy and steep and the view is seriously distracting making it tough to keep your eyes on the road at times. There are several places to pull in and enjoy the view (such as Otepotu Scenic reserve) though so don't worry. Akaroa itself is a pretty, historic town and has a couple of museums. After wandering around the town soaking up the atmosphere for a bit, I opted to do another walk. There are many of varying in lengths in the area -- the visitor's centre has lots of information and maps. I chose the very pleasant Happy Hollow walk, a circular walk which involves a bit of a steep climb. After a while the walk levels out and you are rewarded with magnificent views of the town and harbour. Plenty of other stuff to do in Akaroa too including harbour cruises to check out the sea life including dolphins and penguins. |
