Amsterdam is full of lovely old buildings like this one and tall thin town houses with ornate gables. You can get a good overview of the city and do a bit of gable- spotting by taking one of the many canal boat trips that are available. Look out for places to return to once you're back on dry land and decide to participate in Amsterdam's very civilised café society. This area by the Singel canal near Stromarkt was favoured by my co-traveler who took advantage of the cakes and pastries available at the bakers on the corner.
